The “Southern Gold” known as Tupelo Honey swirls with legend, swamp lore, and pop music!  It is one of the rarest honeys in the USA.

“She's as sweet as tupelo honey
She's an angel of the first degree
She's as sweet as tupelo honey
Just like honey from the bee"
- Van Morrison, "Tupelo Honey"

Beekeepers clamber to place their hives on the wet barks or even barges in the remote swamp wetlands of Florida and Georgia.  The fragile blossoms of the White Tupelo (Nyssa Ogechee) tree provide the prized nectar for a mere 2-3 weeks in April/May.  If it's too dry or windy, the nectar evaporates. If it's rainy, the nectar will be washed away. If it’s to cold, the bees won't fly.

It may sound like an awful lot of effort to go through, but once you have tasted Tupelo honey for yourself, you will understand why.

Pure tupelo honey is light amber in color.

SOURCE

Apalachicola River region, Florida

TASTING NOTES

Mild yet rich, buttery-sweet flavor with hints of spice and an incredibly smooth floral taste. Often described as pear-like.
